Although more than 13 percent of the total Labour vote in 1983 came from ethnic minorities, there were no black MPs. Diane Abbott, Paul Boateng and Sharon Atkin promoted the idea of black sections within Labour to further minority representation and exercise some power within the party. The Labour leadership team of Neil Kinnock and Roy Hattersley, however, decided to stamp out black sections because they thought they were divisive and would prevent Labour from getting elected. Hence they deselected Atkin from a safe seat in Nottingham in 1987 when she said: ‘I do not give a damn about Neil Kinnock and a racist Labour Party’. The idea of black sections then died.
